Introduction to Speech Eurythmy Part 2 – 5th May 2018

Introduction to Speech Eurythmy Part 2 – 5th May 2018

This workshop on Speech Eurythmy is the rescheduling of the workshop in March that was cancelled due to ‘The Beast from the East’. It follows on from the previous workshop on the 10th February about the consonants in Eurythmy. This time we will focus more on the vowels and although it links with the previous workshop it also completely stands alone and you don’t have to have attended the previous workshops to be able to follow this one.

Eurythmy workshop at a training seminar October 2017.

In this workshop we will work with the qualities of the vowels and how they link to our soul experience and expression  – which ones do we relate to the most and how can they help us to become more conscious of how we are in the world. We will also work with various exercises and poems throughout the morning.

It is not necessary to have attended other workshops to take part in this one or to have any experience with eurythmy or movement in general. All you need to bring is yourself!

Experiencing the Zodiac – Saturday 20th January

Experiencing the Zodiac – Saturday 20th January

The workshop in November on Experiencing the Planets went well and we did a lot of exploring and talking about the quality of the movements and the experiences they gave us. It was such a pleasure to work with such interested people. Now that we have explored the moving heavenly bodies I thought the time was right to explore the static ones – the constellations of the Zodiac.

experiencing the zodiac

The stars and planets have given direction and guidance to humanity from time immemorial – there is evidence that the stone monuments from over 5000 years ago were aligned with the solstices and stars were used to navigate by long before compasses and naval charts were invented. The division of the Zodiac goes back to Babylonian time and it consists of 12 star constellations, which all lie in the path of the Sun, the moon and the visible planets. Western astrology today dates back to the Greek astrologer and astronomer Ptolemy in the 2nd Century AD.

In eurythmy we work with gestures for each of the signs and the sounds connected to them and during this workshop we will explore these gestures and sounds as well as the qualities of the different crosses within the zodiac.

Eurythmy can be done by anyone regardless of experience with movement and level of fitness. All you need to bring is yourself!

Experiencing the Planets – Saturday 18th November

Belief that the planets and stars that surround our in comparison tiny earth have different qualities and influence us has been around since ancient time and it’s a belief that is still held by many today. The ancient Greeks spoke of ‘the music of the spheres’ and modern day astrology (of the more serious kind) is incredibly complex and has the potential for giving real insight into ones life. In eurythmy we work with both the signs of the Zodiac and the Planets as being cosmic forces that are ever present and affecting us all.

“Truly, the human being grew not only out of those forces which are recognised and assumed by the science of today. The human being grew out of the whole universe, and we understand him only when he is understood as coming out of the whole universe.” R. Steiner

The Planets that we work with in Eurythmy are the 5 planets that can be seen by the naked eye – Venus, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter and Saturn as well as the Sun and the Moon. Through the gestures developed in eurythmy one can get a feeling for the quality of the individual planets and how they are in relation to each other. In this workshop we will work with these gestures as well as the sound gestures and colours associated with each to help us get a broader experience of each planet.

“I loved every minute!”

Thursday ‘After Work’ Eurythmy Class starting 14th September

Thursday ‘After Work’ Eurythmy Class starting 14th September

It’s the last weekend of ‘the festival’ here in Edinburgh and the city will soon return to it’s normal rhythm. The summer has gone rather fast again this year and it has taken me a bit longer to plan my autumn eurythmy sessions than I thought. This has largely been due to getting regular eurythmy work on Tuesdays, which means I will have to change my Tuesday evening class to a Thursday ‘After Work’ class running from 5.30 – 6.30 pm. I hope this might actually make it easier for some people to attend, as they can attend after work rather than having to come back out in the evening.

During these 8 sessions we will be working with several autumnal poems as well as exploring some of the more meditative eurythmy exercises and working with sound gestures. We will of course also still continue work with exercises that aid concentration and coordination as well as social exercises.

The dates for the sessions are: 14th and 21st September, 5th and 26th October and 2nd, 9th, 16th and 23rd November.

Start: Thursday 14th September 5.30 – 6.30 pm

Venue: Orwell Arts, 17 Orwell Place, Edinburgh, EH11 2AD

Cost: £40 for the 8 sessions.

Colour in Movement – Saturday 9th September

Colour in Movement – Saturday 9th September

Colour is everywhere around us and forms a constant visual backdrop to our lives. It is also intimately connected with our soul moods as can be seen in common expressions such as ‘she is feeling blue’, ‘he saw red’, or ‘they were green with envy’. As well as colours being specifically mentioned in writings such as poetry, many poems also have an overall colour mood, which one can work with when expressing the poem in eurythmy/movement.

In eurythmy we work with Goethe’s colour theory, which talks of the ‘deeds and sufferings of the light’. Colour emerges when light engages with darkness in different ways – e.g. whether it accepts it or pushes it away. Working with colour in movement can give a stronger impression of the qualities of each colour as well as the influence it has on one’s soul mood.

During this workshop we will be exploring the different colours in movement and their influence on our soul mood and how we connect with others. We will also work with how to find the basic colour mood of a poem and how it can be expressed in movement. There will be a coffee break about halfway through where there will be time to chat and talk about our experiences.

Eurythmy can be done by anyone regardless of experience with movement and level of fitness. All you need to bring is yourself!

Eurythmy for Social Awareness – Saturday 17th June

Eurythmy for Social Awareness – Saturday 17th June

Summer is drawing near and I don’t know about you, but I am feeling more social and more tuned in to what is around me compared to how I am in the winter. Being a keen photographer one of the only things that really makes me pay attention to nature in the winter is a thick hoarfrost or naked branches against an indigo sky after sunset. At the moment I am finding it hard to find time to browse through and delete all photos that don’t make the mark. Summer is a time for being out and about, enjoying whatever warmth there is (we are in Scotland after all!) and eating ice cream with coffee!

So I thought that for the last Saturday Eurythmy workshop before the summer break it would be quite appropriate to focus on the exercises that have been developed specifically for working with groups to aid social awareness. These exercises build up gradually in complexity and are challenging and fun at the same time. They can enable the group to tune into each other to such an extent that the exercise becomes like a moving meditation or an experience of group mindfulness. Here’s a few quotes from people who have participated in similar workshops:

Very calming and relaxing. Felt very much like an active mediation and felt that my mind had less ‘chatter’ by the time we had finished.”

“I enjoyed the session. As it went further it became more like a dance which was becoming more co-ordinated with movement and people becoming more synchronized. Enjoyed a feeling of mutual co-operation.”

Eurythmy can be done by anyone regardless of experience with movement and level of fitness. All you need to bring is yourself!

Movement and Metamorphosis – Saturday 27th May

Movement and Metamorphosis – Saturday 27th May

Spring seems to be happening really fast here in Edinburgh at the moment. I didn’t have quite enough time to enjoy the cherry blossoms before they were starting to fade and the leaves took over and the lilacs are speeding ahead so fast that it won’t be long till they’re past it either. Spring is the time of year where there is an abundance of change and transformation taking place right before our eyes. You can sometimes see noticeable changes from day to day, and trees that have stood bare all winter now sport the most amazing and varied shades of green.

Even when we can’t see it, there is always some kind of change happening in the natural world. The same holds true for ourselves and our lives. Sometimes these changes are really positive and wanted, but sometimes it can also feel like life is pushing you around a bit; there are demands coming at you from everywhere and people around you need you to be there for them. Finding time and space to nurture ourselves can be hard and it can be even harder to stay centred and focus in the midst of the constant streams of conflicting needs and requirements.

Working with issues such as these in eurythmy can provide a welcome insight and experience into how we can stay more centred in the midst of pressure and change. In this workshop we will be experimenting with how we can take on a more watery or airy quality to be able to flow with the changes more and better adapt to our circumstances. We will be working with principles taken from form drawing where forms change and metamorphose slowly over time and from water flowforms where the water is guided into a slowly growing and enlivening path. Focus will be on finding more flow in our own movement as well as the movement between everyone in the group.

The workshop is suitable for anyone regardless of prior experience with eurythmy or movement. All you need to bring is yourself and a pair of eurythmy shoes or antislip socks if you have any – if not, socks will do just fine.

Eurythmy Evening Classes starting 2nd May

Eurythmy Evening Classes starting 2nd May

How do you ensure you have time during the week to reconnect with yourself? Maybe with a quiet cup of coffe/tea or a glass of wine? Do you meditate – or try, or maybe do yoga or another kind of movement class or exercise? Do you find it hard to make time for these things and just grab whatever moment you can? Surely committing to yet another weekly activity is NOT the way to get more time to reconnect!

The thing is that maybe sometimes it is. Especially if the activity we commit to is one of the very things that can really help us to become more present in ourselves and more aware of the space around us. Eurythmy is a little known treasure in this field. It is a performance art and as such the foundation of it is artistic, but within, around and underlying this art is the fact that in it’s very nature it is an enlivening form of movement that continually requires us to become more and more aware of our movement and the space around us. It is also not only a performance art: it is also a social movement art and there are numerous exercises that can continually help us improve both our coordination, concentration and mindfulness of self as well as our connection to the people around us.

However, for this awareness to grow you will need to commit to a regular practise – just as you would if you want to get physically fit or learn to play an instrument. This is why I am starting a weekly evening class as well as monthly Saturday morning workshops – because sometimes having a regular commitment just gets us going and can give us that much needed time during the week where we can reconnect. Come along and try something new – no previous experience is needed. All you need to bring is yourself and preferably wear comfortable clothes and thick socks (anti-slip if you have any).

TIME:  TUESDAY EVENINGS 7.30 – 8.30pm from the 2nd MAY for 8 weeks.

VENUE: Orwell Arts, 17 Orwell Place, Edinburgh, EH11 2AD

COST: £5 per person per week – if you commit to and pay upfront for all 8 sessions at the first session you get the last session free.

Saturday Workshop: Fundamentals of Eurythmy

If you haven’t heard of eurythmy before you are probably not alone. There are so many other movement workshops around that to keep up with every single one of them is quite impossible and the name might sound a bit obscure and not so easy to remember. However, eurythmy is exactly the meaning of it’s name: harmonious movement. It is a movement art that can help us reconnect and to feel ourselves as a fully present member of our own little microcosm and the wider macrocosm around. It helps us become aware of ourselves and to stay present in our everyday busyness and to feel a greater sense of connection to what is going on around us.

My upcoming workshop Fundamentals of Eurythmy on the 29th April is both intended to be a taster session for anyone who hasn’t tried eurythmy before and to be a refresher for those who have. During the workshop we will work with some of the very fundamental aspects of movement – how we connect with the ground beneath us and how we consciously engage with the space we are moving in. We will be working with aspects such as rhythm and geometric forms and there will be plenty of exercises that you can use as a movement meditation and that you can continue practising at home. There will also be exercises that help improve our coordination and concentration and that are fun, upbeat and engaging. All in all it’s intended to be both a lively and reflective morning that will hopefully help you look at movement in a whole new way. So if you feel like trying something new and getting a few tools to work with at home come along! All you need to bring is yourself and a pair of eurythmy shoes or antislip socks if you have any – if not, socks will do just fine.
